    I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

    Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out fare better. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, we’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.

    What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

    A friend or family member who is attuned to you and your story can help so much! In fact, this is kind of support is vital to your flourishing. A licensed professional counselor, on the other hand,  has the training, skills, and experience in identifying root issues that cause teh symptoms you are experiencing. Then they have the tools and skills to help people heal the underlying emotional wounds.

    Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

    Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve deep underlying issues. Sometimes medication is needed for stability in conjunction with counseling and research shows good results for this in some mental health disgnoses.  However, medications come with side effects that need to be considered in the overall picture of a healthy life. Talk to your doctor and talk to a trusted and licensed therapist to decide the best pathway for you.

    How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

    Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. At Seven Oaks Therapy, we tailor our therapeutic approach to your specific needs and according to best practices. For EMDR clients, time and effort is put into education about the process and what is needed for full engagement of clients before the therapy is implemented.
